Seaside holidays on Île de Ré
Île de Ré lies in the Atlantic Ocean and is connected to mainland France by a bridge near La Rochelle. Camping Les Amis de la Plage enjoys a central location on the southern side of the island, with direct access to the sandy beach of Le Pas des Bœufs, considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
The campsite and its surroundings have a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, making it a wonderful destination for couples looking for a beach holiday as well as keen cyclists. With a pleasant climate and more than 100 kilometres of cycle paths winding through beautiful scenery, Île de Ré is perfect for exploring by bike. Younger guests can enjoy the playground at the campsite, with a bouncy castle, table tennis and a lively entertainment team during the high season.
The rental tents at this friendly campsite are situated at the edge of the site, close to the beach. Trees, hedges and colourful flowers give the campsite a distinctly Mediterranean feel.
In July and August, the campsite has a small shop selling fresh bread and essential groceries. Outside these months, you can find everything you need at the mini-supermarket about 1 kilometre away. There is no bar, restaurant or swimming pool on the campsite itself, but you’ll find these facilities just outside the entrance. Right next to the campsite is a restaurant with a swimming pool, which is open to campsite guests for a fee in July and August.
The village of Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré is about 1.5 kilometres away and easily reached by bike. In July and August, a free shuttle bus also runs between the campsite and the centre of Bois-Plage every half hour. Here, you’ll find a supermarket, a fresh produce market and plenty of inviting bars and restaurants.
Tips for exploring the area around Les Amis de la Plage
- Île de Ré is a cyclist’s paradise. Explore the island by bike, following the paths along the coast and discovering its many charms. There are more than 100 kilometres of cycle routes to explore.
- Visit the Vauban fortifications in Saint-Martin-de-Ré and discover the island’s oyster farming museum.
- Browse the large market in Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré.
- Explore the salt marshes of Loix.
- Admire the spectacular views from the Phare des Baleines, one of the tallest and most impressive lighthouses in France.
- Visit Ars-en-Ré, officially recognised as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’.
- Try your hand at beach fishing.
- Take a walk through the vineyards.
- Spend a day in La Rochelle and explore the old harbour with its historic towers. In the evening, the harbour is beautifully illuminated, making it the perfect time to stroll along the quays and browse the stalls of the artisan market.
